Brownlee’s triple-double effort enough to save Ginebra from another meltdown
Justin Brownlee put up another monster performance in the Barangay Ginebra’s squeaker win over the San Miguel Beermen in their 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup clash on Sunday.
Turning in another workman-like, all-around showing with a triple-double of 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 14 assists in 45 minutes of action against SMB, Brownlee’s effort did not go in vain this time.
Just like their Dubai game versus the NLEX Road Warriors over a week ago when they squandered a huge 28-point lead before suffering a monumental collapse, the Gin Kings also found themselves in the same situation against the Beermen.
With Ginebra up by as much as 18 points in the third period, San Miguel slowly chipped away at the lead to make it just a two-point game.
But Brownlee, who piled up 46 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists in loss against NLEX, helped Ginebra avert another meltdown as the import sparked a 10-2 attack to secure the win that ended the team’s two-game losing skid.
“We knew if we get up on this team, we’re gonna expect to come back. They got a lot of weapons,” Brownlee said.
“But we just knew if we stick to our defense, we can try to do whatever we can to pull it out,” he added.
But it was not only Brownlee who stepped up in the win, as five locals ended up in double-digit scoring in Ginebra’s balanced attack.
“Like I said, just gotta give a lot of credit to the team, they hit some shots. LA hit some big shots, Stanley had a great game, Japeth, and Greg, his presence was huge,” the three-time PBA champion import added.
