Fajardo-less Beermen stamp class on Magnolia for opening win
San Miguel Beermen reasserted its mastery over the Magnolia Hotshots, cruising to a 94-78 win in the opening day of the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
In a rematch of the last two All-Filipino Cup championship, the Beermen proved it can do well without their prized center June Mar Fajardo as SMB surged in the second quarter before leading by as much as 23 points in the second half to pick up their first win.
Without injured Fajardo, Moala Tautuaa stepped up for San Miguel as he led the team with 20 points and 11 rebounds as well as two assists and two blocks.
Terrence Romeo added 19 points and seven assists in the win. Arwind Santos produced 18 points and 15 boards, Marcio Lassiter had 17 points, while Alex Cabagnot notched 10 markers.
Meanwhile, Magnolia was topscored by Paul Lee who had 19 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
New recruit Jackson Corpuz and Mythical Second Team member Ian Sangalang meanwhile had 16 points and combined for 24 boards in the defeat.
