Meralco takes out TNT, sets up finals rematch with Ginebra
Meralco Bolts punched the last 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup finals berth after getting past the TNT KaTropa, 89-78, in Game 5 at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Monday night.
The Bolts had to come back from a 1-2 series disadvantage in the best-of-five semifinals, sweeping the last two games to overcome TNT, 3-2, and set up a best-of-seven championship match versus tormentors Barangay Ginebra for the third time in four years.
Allen Durham had an all-around game of 28 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Chris Newsome added 23 points, while Bong Quinto recorded a career-high of 19 points for the win.
Flipping the switch in the third quarter, Meralco turned a 53-51 deficit into 66-61 lead and never looked back as the Bolts owned the final frame as well, clicking on both ends to lead by as much as 16 points.
KJ McDaniels paced TNT with 30 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Ray Parks added 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jayson Castro had 11, while Roger Pogoy and Troy Rosario added 10 markers apiece in a lost cause as TNT has not reached the finals of the Governors’ Cup since 2011.
