NorthPort draws first blood with emphatic win over Ginebra
NorthPort Batang Pier extended its winning run as it shackled the Barangay Ginebra, 124-90, in Game 1 of their 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup semifinals clash at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Saturday night.
The Batang Pier drew the first blood in the best-of-five series after a rousing second-half performance, ditching Ginebra’s stirring fightback before pulling away for good, leading by as much as 37 points in the fourth quarter.
Dating back to the elimination round, the eighth seed Batang Pier are now on a five-game winning streak, as they beat the Gin Kings twice in a row now in the tournament.
Import Michael Qualls led NorthPort to the rousing victory with 38 points and 15 rebounds. Garvo Lanete fired 24 points on six treys, while Christian Standhardinger and Sol Mercado added 16 and 14 points, respectively, with the former also grabbing 15 boards for a double-double effort.
Justin Brownlee and Stanley Pringle paced the losing side with 24 and 21 markers respectively that just went to waste as Ginebra failed to give coach Tim Cone the win on his birthday.
Game 2 of the series is on Monday, December 16, still at the Big Dome.
