With over a month before the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup, the Philippine men’s national basketball team does not have specific target yet for its final roster.
Gilas head coach and program director Tab Baldwin bared last Friday that the team is planning to hold its training session at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna by the end of the month to prepare for the upcoming tournament.
But the talks about the final lineup is still a mystery as the decision is not just in his hands and there are many things to consider before coming up with a definite roster.
“We have not discussed that with the players or with the other basketball stakeholders at this point, you understand what I’m talking about with the collegiate teams and the PBA teams who have our draftees,” Baldwin said.
“This is obviously a question that should be directed to the SBP because there will be answers needed to that and relatively soon.”
Kai Sotto, for one, has yet to report to his Adelaide team in NBL while Justine Baltazar, Carl Tamayo, Dwight Ramos, and RJ Abarrientos might be needed by their respective teams in the UAAP.
Sotto, Baltazar, Tamayo, Ramos, and Abarrientos were included in the 12-man roster that represented the Philippines in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament together with naturalized player Angelo Koume, Isaac Go, Mike Nieto, William Navarro, SJ Belangel Jordan Heading, and Geo Chiu.
