Stellar third quarter pushes Ginebra to 2-1 series lead
Barangay Ginebra went on a familiar second-half rampage to pull off a 92-84 win over the Meralco Bolts, in Game Three of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup finals on Sunday night at the Big Dome.
Up by just one at the end of the first half, the Gin Kings clicked on both ends of the floor in the third quarter, exploding for a 35-16 run before staving off a potential Meralco comeback in the final frame.
Stanley Pringle sparked the third-quarter breakaway, dropping 17 of his 21 points in the third where Ginebra led by as much as 23 points on their way to the victory that gave them a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-seven showdown.
Justin Brownlee made a near triple-double of 24 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, while Japeth Aguilar had 23 points and seven blocks as the duo kept Meralco at bay in the payoff period.
Meanwhile, after a 20-point performance in the first half, Chris Newsome was silenced in the next two quarters to end up with 24 points, as Allen Durham added 23 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Game Four of the best-of-seven series is on Wednesday, January 15, 7:00 p.m. still at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
