San Miguel Beermen survived a gutsy stand by the Magnolia Hotshots as it grinded out a 90-89 win in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena Friday night.
Withstanding several rallies by the Hotshots late to walk away with the narrow one-point win, the Beermen kept an immaculate win-loss record, improving to a 4-0 mark which is good for a second place in the team standings.
Dez Wells delivered on both ends for the Beermen, giving the lead to his team through a lay-up with 2:07 left to play, before pulling a steal off Ian Sangalang underneath the Magnolia basket in the dying seconds to preserve the win and their unbeaten slate.
Wells carried the cudgels for San Miguel with 33 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks, while June Mar Fajardo and Alex Cabagnot added 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, Romeo Travis showed the way for the defensive champion Hotshots, finishing with 31 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists before sitting out the final five minutes due to an ankle sprain.
Paul Lee, who chipped part of his tooth late due to a bad landing, managed 22 points, while Ian Sangalang provided 14 markers for Magnolia in the loss that snapped their three-game winning streak, dropping their record to 3-2 in the process.
